Confidence first, strength second.
About
My name is Steph
I’m a climbing coach who helps people feel capable, confident, and at home on the wall, long before strength or grades become the focus.
I still remember my first visit to a bouldering gym in London, Urban Ascent in Parsons Green. I fell in love straight away: the problem solving, the physical challenge, the way climbing made you think and move at the same time. It was fun and social. I met a welcoming community of climbers, and I was hooked.
That curiosity quickly pulled me into lead-climbing and outdoor trips, thanks to climbers I met along the way who became long-term friends and mentors. But behind the scenes, I was also dealing with things that many climbers recognise: a strong fear of falling, frustration around being shorter, and a tendency to overthink moves instead of trying them.
I remember feeling intimidated to try hard in front of others, worrying about how I looked rather than how I moved. Being told to “just reach” only reinforced the idea that my body was the problem, until I realised it wasn’t. What needed to change wasn’t my height, but my mindset and movement strategy.
Then came my plateau.
As I started chasing grades, the fun slowly faded. Ego crept in. Excuses too. Progress felt heavy, and climbing became something I felt I should be good at, rather than something I enjoyed. That phase taught me one of the most important lessons I now pass on to my climbers: failing is part of the process, and progress doesn’t always look like a higher grade.
That experience shaped my coaching.
Today, I believe climbing should feel fun, accessible, and empowering, not intimidating or performance-driven. My coaching focuses on understanding movement, managing fears, and building confidence. We try things instead of overthinking, use technique to make climbing feel easier, and get stronger without it feeling like training.
Whether you’re new to rope climbing, learning to lead, or feeling stuck despite being strong, I create a calm, non-judgemental space where progress feels natural and enjoyable. No ego. No pressure. Just thoughtful coaching, trust, and curiosity.
Stephpedrock is about climbing with confidence first, because when you feel safe, capable, and curious on the wall, everything else follows.
